940 CONTROLLING YOUR EMOTIONS

 

SYNOPSIS: Emotions can be good or bad. Does the bible speak about controlling our emotions? In today’s lesson we are going to study mind control in relation to our emotions. Can satan control your emotions? What are our emotions? Why are they so significant? What happens to our soul if we don’t control our emotions? What happens if we are too emotional? What happens if we are not emotional at all? What is the first emotion in the bible?

HASHABBAT LESSON: EMOTIONS. D’varim (Deut) 34:12-14 HIS very name is jealous.

Exo 34:14  because you are not to bow down to any other god; since YEHOVAH—whose very name is Jealous—is a jealous God. 

 

JEALOUS: H7067 קנּא qannâ' BDB Definition: jealous (only of God). Definition of Jealous  1. Suspicious; apprehensive of rivalship; uneasy through fear that another has withdrawn or may withdraw from one the affections of a person he loves. We say, a young man is jealous of the woman he loves, or jealous of his rival. A man is jealous of his wife, and the wife of her husband. 2. Suspicious that we do not enjoy the affection or respect of others, or that another is more loved and respected than ourselves.

 

D’varim (Deut) 5:7-10 I, YEHOVAH your God, am a jealous God .

Deu 5:7  ב " 'You are to have no other gods before me. 

Deu 5:8  You are not to make for yourselves a carved image or any kind of representation of anything in heaven above, on the earth beneath or in the water below the shoreline— 

Deu 5:9  you are not to bow down to them or serve them; for I, YEHOVAH your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents, also the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 

Deu 5:10  but displaying grace to the thousandth generation of those who love me and obey my mitzvot. 

 

Question: what is the first emotion we see in the bible?

 

Emotions: a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.

 

SIMILAR: feeling, sensation, reaction, response, passion, warmth, fervor &     excitement

 

B’resheet (Gen) 1:1-5 what is the first emotion we see in the bible?

Gen 1:4  God saw that the light was good, and God divided the light from the darkness.

B’resheet (Gen) 1:26-28 ELOHIM blessed them.

Gen 1:28  God blessed them: God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the air and every living creature that crawls on the earth."

Gen 2:18  YEHOVAH, God, said, "It isn't good that the person should be alone. I will make for him a companion suitable for helping him."

Gen 3:1  Now the serpent was more crafty than any wild animal which YEHOVAH, God, had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You are not to eat from any tree in the garden'?" 

Gen 3:2  The woman answered the serpent, "We may eat from the fruit of the trees of the garden, 

Gen 3:3  but about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, 'You are neither to eat from it nor touch it, or you will die.' " 

Gen 3:4  The serpent said to the woman, "It is not true that you will surely die; 

Gen 3:5  because God knows that on the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 

Gen 3:6  When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it had a pleasing appearance and that the tree was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her; and he ate.

Jos 1:9  Haven't I ordered you, 'Be strong, be bold'? So don't be afraid or downhearted, because YEHOVAH your God is with you wherever you go."

DOWNHEARTED – DISMAYED: H2865 חתת châthath BDB Definition: 1) to be shattered, be dismayed, be broken, be abolished, be afraid 2) to be shattered, be broken

If you allow these 2 emotions to rule you

 

2nd Timothy 1:7 We don’t have a spirit of fear.

2Ti 1:7  For God gave us a Spirit who produces not timidity, but power, love and self-discipline. 

 

TIMIDITY: G1167 δειλία deilia Thayer Definition: timidity, fearfulness, cowardice

 

Galatians 5:16-26 For the old nature wants what is contrary to the Spirit.

Gal 5:16  What I am saying is this: run your lives by the Spirit. Then you will not do what your old nature wants. 

Gal 5:17  For the old nature wants what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit wants what is contrary to the old nature. These oppose each other, so that you find yourselves unable to carry out your good intentions.
